The Blessed Ten Days of Dhu’l-Hijja

  • Bismillah

The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and grant him peace, informed us that there are no days in which righteous actions are more beloved to Allah than these days. For that reason the scholars have ruled that these days are better than the final ten days of Ramadan, although the nights of Ramadan are superior to these nights. Allah Himself swears by them in Surat al-Fajr, which is sufficient evidence of their greatness.

It has been narrated that fasting one of these days is equal to the reward of fasting for a whole year and standing in one of these nights in prayer is equal to standing on Laylat al-Qadr. Also the reward for actions in these days is multiplied seven hundred times.

This is not to mention the Day of Arafat (the 9th of Dhu’l-Hijja) which is the greatest day of the year. Fasting that day wipes out the sins of the previous year and the year to come.

The hadith above mentioned righteous actions but didn’t specify which ones.  Instead it was left open. Whether it be prayer, fasting, charity, dhikr, learning knowledge, helping people,  any righteous actions we do will greatly rewarded and beyond that are beloved to Allah. This is also a time when du’a is answered.

The Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, also said that winter is like spring for a believer: the night is long so he is able to stand in prayer in it, and the day is short so he is able to fast during it. Just as the animals find good pasture with the coming of springtime, likewise in winter the believer finds it easy to perform acts of obedience and to pluck the fruits that Allah has made easily available.

These are days when people are converging in their hundreds of thousands to visit the House of Allah and to visit His beloved Messenger e and there is nothing to stop anyone who cannot be physically with them from trying to draw close to Him and seeking the closeness of His Messenger. Allah tells us that He is with us and remembers us when we remember Him, and whenever we send greetings to the Beloved Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace, he receives them and returns them.

There is no action more beloved to Allah on the Day of Eid than making a sacrifice. If anyone wants to make a sacrifice (qurbaani/udhia) here in Tarim please contact me as soon as possible. There are many people in need amongst the flood victims and the poor people of Tarim. The Messenger of Allah, Allah bless him and grant him peace, told his beloved daughter Sayyida Fatima al-Zahra that she would have forgiveness for her previous wrongdoings with the first drop of blood to be shed from the sacrificed animal. She asked if this reward was specifically for the household of the Prophet and he replied: “For us and for all the Muslims.”

Allah give us the ability to fill these days with acts of goodness that bring us closer to Him. Allah help us to follow in the footsteps of His Chosen One in all that we do inwardly and outwardly, may Allah bless him and his family, Companions and all those that follow him until the end of time.

The following is some adhkar that the salihin would read ten times every day for the first ten days of Dhu’l-Hijja:

In the name of Allah, the All-Compassionate, the All-Merciful.

O Allah I present to You in front of every breath, every second, every instant, every thought, every blinking of the eye of the peoples of the heavens and the earth, and everything which is existent in Your knowledge or was existent, I present to You in front of all of this1:

La ilaha illa’llah the number of nights and ages, the number of days and months,

the number of waves in the oceans, the multiplication of rewards,

the number of raindrops, the number of leaves on the trees,

the amount of hair and fur, the amount of sand and rocks,

the number of flowers and fruits, the number of breaths of mankind,

the number of our sins so that they are forgiven, the number of blinking of eyes,

the amount of that which has been and that which will be, La ilaha illa’llah exalted is He above that which people worship alongside Him

La ilaha illa’llah (this is) better than that which they amass (of the dunya), La ilaha illa’llah iin the night when it darkens,

La ilaha illa’llah in the morning when it breathes, La ilaha illa’llah the number of winds that blow in the desert and the number of rocks,

La ilaha illa’llah from this day to the day on which the Trumpet is blown, La ilaha illa’llah the number of His entire creation

From this day to the Day of Recompense

This is to be read ten times and at the end read:

In every instant for ever the number of His creation, to His satisfaction, the weight of His throne and the amount of ink of His words.

This is also to be read ten times:

O Allah send blessings upon our Master Muhammad as much as the eyes see, as much as the earth becomes verdant after rainfall, the number of people making Hajj and Umra, making the talbiya2, shaving their heads, making tawaf around the Ancient House and kissing the Stone and upon his family and companions In every instant for ever the number of Your creation, to Your satisfaction, the weight of Your throne and the amount of ink of Your words.

    ***

1 What is meant by this is: “I present this as a defence from the evil of any of the things mentioned and seeking all the good that is contained in them,” and Allah knows best. This is only read at the beginning of the dhikr, what is after it is to be read ten times. The author of Kanz al-Najah w’al-Surur mentions that some of these adhkar have a chain of narration going back to the Prophet, Allah bless him and grant him peace.

2 Saying “labbayk Allahumma labbayk” etc.

Wa alaykum salam wa rahmatullahi wa barakatuh Umm Talha

    Al-Hamdu lillah, wa iyyakum.

It is recommended to fast the first nine days of Dhul-Hijja; especially on the 9th. It is impermissible to fast on the 10th, as it is Eid al-Adha. It would also be impermissible to fast the three days following Eid al-Adha; i.e. the 11th, 12th and 13th.

The following are beneficial Q&As related to Eid, fasting, and the merits of Dhul-Hijja, according to the Shafi’i and Hanafi school. Please benefit:
