Tazkiya: Beneficial Counsels
-
“Beneficial Counsels”
The book which Sayyidi al-Habib Umar bin Hafiz (may Allah preserve him) has chosen to teach is Imam al-Haddad’s al-Wasaya al-Nafi`ah or “Beneficial Counsels.” It is a collection of nine counsels which the Imam gave to his students. Each counsel contains beneficial advice which is provision for the wayfarer on his or her journey to Allah. The book has recently been republished and was not among the ten books contained in the well-known series.
Imam al-Haddad’s life was spent calling to Allah and counselling His slaves, and this book is a reflection of that. Habib `Umar now follows in his footsteps, reviving the tradition of giving counsel to those seeking Allah. We aim to provide a translation of the text as Habib reads through it. The Arabic text is available here.
Imam `Abdullah ibn `Alawi al-Haddad (may Allah have mercy upon him) “the Pillar of Guidance” was born near the city of Tarim in the Hadramawt Valley in the year 1044 Hijri (1634 CE) . His da’wa, his teachings in the form of poetry and prose, and his invocations spread far and wide during his lifetime and continue to spread to this day. He was recognised as being the “Renewer” of the 12th Islamic Century. He died near Tarim in 1132 (1719).Habib `Ali al-Habashi said of him:
Everyone that takes the path after him
Is guided by his brilliant light
He was the cooling of the eye of the Prophet Muhammad
And he is one of the best of his children.
May Allah benefit us by the counsel of the Knowers of Allah and help us to act upon what we learn so that we attain His love and pleasure.
